    360° mulsemedia experience over next generation wireless networks - a reinforcement learning approach

    The next generation of wireless networks targets aspiring key performance indicators, like very low latency, higher data rates and more capacity, paving the way for new generations of video streaming technologies, such as 360° or omnidirectional videos. One possible application that could revolutionize the streaming technology is the 360° MULtiple SEnsorial MEDIA (MULSEMEDIA) which enriches the 360° video content with other media objects like olfactory, haptic or even thermoceptic ones. However, the adoption of the 360° Mulsemedia applications might be hindered by the strict Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, like very large bandwidth and low latency for fast responsiveness to the users, inputs that could impact their Quality of Experience (QoE). To this extent, this paper introduces the new concept of 360° Mulsemedia as well as it proposes the use of Reinforcement Learning to enable QoS provisioning over the next generation wireless networks that influences the QoE of the end-users

    Seamless Multimedia Delivery Within a Heterogeneous Wireless Networks Environment: Are We There Yet?

    The increasing popularity of live video streaming from mobile devices, such as Facebook Live, Instagram Stories, Snapchat, etc. pressurizes the network operators to increase the capacity of their networks. However, a simple increase in system capacity will not be enough without considering the provisioning of quality of experience (QoE) as the basis for network control, customer loyalty, and retention rate and thus increase in network operators revenue. As QoE is gaining strong momentum especially with increasing users' quality expectations, the focus is now on proposing innovative solutions to enable QoE when delivering video content over heterogeneous wireless networks. In this context, this paper presents an overview of multimedia delivery solutions, identifies the problems and provides a comprehensive classification of related state-of-the-art approaches following three key directions: 1) adaptation; 2) energy efficiency; and 3) multipath content delivery. Discussions, challenges, and open issues on the seamless multimedia provisioning faced by the current and next generation of wireless networks are also provided

    A comparison of reinforcement learning algorithms in fairness-oriented OFDMA schedulers

    Due to large-scale control problems in 5G access networks, the complexity of radioresource management is expected to increase significantly. Reinforcement learning is seen as apromising solution that can enable intelligent decision-making and reduce the complexity of differentoptimization problems for radio resource management. The packet scheduler is an importantentity of radio resource management that allocates users’ data packets in the frequency domainaccording to the implemented scheduling rule. In this context, by making use of reinforcementlearning, we could actually determine, in each state, the most suitable scheduling rule to be employedthat could improve the quality of service provisioning. In this paper, we propose a reinforcementlearning-based framework to solve scheduling problems with the main focus on meeting the userfairness requirements. This framework makes use of feed forward neural networks to map momentarystates to proper parameterization decisions for the proportional fair scheduler. The simulation resultsshow that our reinforcement learning framework outperforms the conventional adaptive schedulersoriented on fairness objective. Discussions are also raised to determine the best reinforcement learningalgorithm to be implemented in the proposed framework based on various scheduler settings

    Enhancing user fairness in OFDMA radio access networks through machine learning

    The problem of radio resource scheduling subject to fairness satisfaction is very challenging even in future radio access networks. Standard fairness criteria aim to find the best trade-off between overall throughput maximization and user fairness satisfaction under various types of network conditions. However, at the Radio Resource Management (RRM) level, the existing schedulers are rather static being unable to react according to the momentary networking conditions so that the user fairness measure is maximized all time. This paper proposes a dynamic scheduler framework able to parameterize the proportional fair scheduling rule at each Transmission Time Interval (TTI) to improve the user fairness. To deal with the framework complexity, the parameterization decisions are approximated by using the neural networks as non-linear functions. The actor-critic Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithm is used to learn the best set of non-linear functions that approximate the best fairness parameters to be applied in each momentary state. Simulations results reveal that the proposed framework outperforms the existing fairness adaptation techniques as well as other types of RL-based schedulers

    A machine learning resource allocation solution to improve video quality in remote education

    The current global pandemic crisis has unquestionably disrupted the higher education sector, forcing educational institutions to rapidly embrace technology-enhanced learning. However, the COVID-19 containment measures that forced people to work or stay at home, have determined a significant increase in the Internet traffic that puts tremendous pressure on the underlying network infrastructure. This affects negatively content delivery and consequently user perceived quality, especially for video-based services. Focusing on this problem, this paper proposes a machine learning-based resource allocation solution that improves the quality of video services for increased number of viewers. The solution is deployed and tested in an educational context, demonstrating its benefit in terms of major quality of service parameters for various video content, in comparison with existing state of the art. Moreover, a discussion on how the technology is helping to mitigate the effects of massively increasing internet traffic on the video quality in an educational context is also presented

    360° Mulsemedia: A Way to Improve Subjective QoE in 360° Videos

    Previous research has shown that adding multisensory media-mulsemedia-to traditional audiovisual content has a positive effect on user Quality of Experience (QoE). However, the QoE impact of employing mulsemedia in 360° videos has remained unexplored. Accordingly, in this paper, a QoE study for watching a 360° video-with and without multisensory effects-in a full free-viewpoint VR setting is presented. The parametric space we considered to influence the QoE consists of the encoding quality and the motion level of the transmitted media. To achieve our research aim, we propose a wearable VR system that provides multisensory enhancement of 360° videos. Then, we utilise its capabilities to systematically evaluate the effects of multisensory stimulation on perceived quality degradation for videos with different motion levels and encoding qualities. Our results make a strong case for the inclusion of multisensory effects in 360° videos, as they reveal that both user-perceived quality, as well as enjoyment, are significantly higher when mulsemedia (as opposed to traditional multimedia) is employed in this context. Moreover, these observations hold true independent of the underlying 360° video encoding quality-thus QoE can be significantly enhanced with a minimal impact on networking resources

    Multisensory 360 videos under varying resolution levels enhance presence

    Omnidirectional videos have become a leading multimedia format for Virtual Reality applications. While live 360◦ videos offer a unique immersive experience, streaming of omnidirectional content at high resolutions is not always feasible in bandwidth-limited networks. While in the case of flat videos, scaling to lower resolutions works well, 360◦ video quality is seriously degraded because of the viewing distances involved in head-mounted displays. Hence, in this paper, we investigate first how quality degradation impacts the sense of presence in immersive Virtual Reality applications. Then, we are pushing the boundaries of 360◦ technology through the enhancement with multisensory stimuli. 48 participants experimented both 360◦ scenarios (with and without multisensory content), while they were divided randomly between four conditions characterised by different encoding qualities (HD, FullHD, 2.5K, 4K). The results showed that presence is not mediated by streaming at a higher bitrate. The trend we identified revealed however that presence is positively and significantly impacted by the enhancement with multisensory content. This shows that multisensory technology is crucial in creating more immersive experiences
